River House Studio In Bali; A Perfect Combination of Tropical Modernism and Industrial Architecture

Set among the lush greenery, this New River House Studio is the brainchild of Alexis Dornier, a Bali based designer. The private residence itself was also designed by the same firm. As for the Studio, Dornier, who was born in German, need to use the most of the space. It is because this one-bedroom home spans only 100 sq m. And also, it is set in an awkwardly shaped long and narrow parcel.

Moreover, Dornier need to consider the route that connecting the studio with the main house, which limiting the overall composition and the volume’s orientation. As for the result, a 8M depth open-plan New River House Studio is ready to catch your attention.

The living space; seating area, kitchen, and dining – has been placed at the forefront. It’s facing the greenery and the swimming pool outside the deck. This double-height house studio is so spacious! And the staircase will lead you up to a mezzanine which contain the bedroom suite.

Glass balustrades and the fully-glazed walls shows you the outdoor view from every corner. The clean, minimalist interior in steel, wood and concrete creates a rich, yet calming interior setting. While the soothing color palettes connects to the surrounding, and carefully selected artwork make this place a good fit and use of space. ‘Designing a house is an amazing experiment of collaboration between clients, design partners and team members,’ says Dornier. ‘The more cultivated the conversations, the richer the project.’ 

‘Over the years I have learned to accept that the exciting component is not what you know, but the process of navigating through what you don’t know yet – and learning to be okay with that state of mind,’ he explains. ‘We aspire to reach more people through our designs and push our work into the realm of public space, infrastructural projects and housing developments. Anything is exciting at this point.’
