Interior of an empty modern garage in a house.

Do you have a passion for cars? If so, you might want to set up your own garage workshop at home that would allow you to practice your own maintenance and basic repairs and learn all about automotive mechanics. In addition to being an interesting hobby, this could also be a great way to save on garage bills and increase the lifespan of your car! So, how can you go about setting up your own garage?

The Garage

In terms of the space that you have, you want to make sure that it is spacious enough for the vehicle, your tools and equipment and enough space to move around. You also need to ensure that it has proper ventilation and good lighting. If you do not have your own garage at home that is suitable, you could hire one and it is never too hard to find a garage to rent in a city.

Electrical Outlets

You will want plenty of electrical outlets in your workshop so that you can easily power tools, heaters, fans, lighting and computer equipment. You do not want to have extension cables everywhere as this is a trip hazard, so make sure that you have enough electrical outlets for all of the devices that you need to use.

Tools

Obviously, you need to have tools to work on cars and it is important that you are using the right tool for the job and have quality tools. A few key items that you will need include:

  • Impact wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Screwdriver set
  • Pneumatic wrench
  • Pliers
  • Hammer

Additionally, you need to have tool boxes where you can keep your tools organised, safe and protected against the elements. This will also help to keep your workshop tidy and prevent trip hazards.

Equipment & Machinery

In addition to the above tools, there will also be some equipment and machinery that you will need to use to work on cars. This will include things like an engine crane, engine stand, vehicle lift and a wheel balancer. Obviously, you need to make sure that you know how to use this equipment safely and to prioritise safety at all times when working on cars. You can find helpful guides and information online that will show you how to carry out different maintenance tasks and basic repairs.

If you have a passion or interest in cars then you should seriously consider setting up your own garage. This can be a fun, interesting and rewarding venture and you will find that there are all kinds of things that you can do when you have the space and equipment to work on your own car. Not only will this be rewarding, but you should also find that it helps to save money on your car maintenance costs while also prolonging the life of your vehicle.
